In a world first, Sony Digital Cinema is partnering with The Comedy Store to bring fresh stand-up talent to the big screen.
Comedy in store with Sony
In a ground-breaking partnership, Sony Digital Cinema and The Comedy Store are bringing some of the UK’s freshest stand-up comedy talent to the big screen.
For the first time ever, Sony is recording a series of live stage performances at the legendary London comedy venue. Recorded and produced exclusively by Sony for The Comedy Store, the shows will be screened digitally at cinemas in the UK and Eire early next year. It’s also planned to expand distribution to other European countries and worldwide throughout 2013.

A world first in alternative content
The partnership represents an exciting milestone in ‘alternative content’ for cinema owners and audiences alike. By bringing comedy into the context of the big screen, Sony helps cinemas earn fresh revenues from the fast-growing area of non-traditional content. The ground-breaking initiative also lets consumers enjoy iconic performances from one of the world’s best-loved comedy brands without travelling far from their home town.
Alongside stand-up comedy, Sony Digital Cinema gives theatre owners exciting opportunities to exploit other areas of alternative content – from sports, ballet, drama and music concerts to special events. Sony has already brought other ground-breaking content to cinema screens worldwide – from this year’s Wimbledon lawn tennis championships to a classic 1986 Budapest concert performance by rock band Queen.
About The Comedy Store
Widely regarded as the world’s most influential live comedy club, The Comedy Store first opened its doors in 1979. Originally inspired by the US club of the same name, it quickly became a focus for the UK alternative comedy boom of the 1980’s. The venue has helped launch the careers of many top comedians including Paul Merton, French & Saunders, Alexei Sayle, Ben Elton and Simon Pegg. Situated close to London’s Leicester Square, The Comedy Store today has sister venues in Manchester and Mumbai.
