Bringing digital art to life in 4K detail
Digital artworks are being brought to life in one of Singapore’s most cutting-edge art galleries, thanks to laser light source projection from Sony.
Originally founded by art dealer Ikkan Sanada in 1982, Ikkan Art moved from its original New York home to Singapore in 2011. Today, Ikkan Art Gallery presents a wide-ranging collection by international artists. The gallery showcases works across a wide range of media, from paintings, sculpture and photography to video and interactive displays.
With more leading artists looking to digital media as a means of creative expression, Ikkan Art Gallery wanted a high quality display and projection solution capable of meeting its ambitious vision.
Beautiful images, high reliability
Exceptional picture quality with very high image resolution were obvious prerequisites in Ikkan’s choice of visualisation projector. In addition, the gallery needed reliable operation and flexible setup to accommodate a wide range of art installation requirements.

Uninterrupted enjoyment for gallery visitors
Throwing big, beautiful 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution images onto any wall or flat surface from a very short distance, the VPL-GTZ1 lets visitors stand up close to inspect fine details of the artworks without interrupting the projector beam. The projector’s reliable laser light source also allows up to 20,000 hours of maintenance-free operation – saving time and support costs for the gallery.The projector’s stylish ‘blend-in’ design complements any installation environment, while extremely low fan noise ensures that gallery visitors aren’t distracted as they enjoy the show. The VPL-GTZ1 can be floor-standing, ceiling-mounted or used for rear projection. Images from multiple projectors can be blended seamlessly to create even more impressive super-size displays.
Breaking the barriers of conventional projection
Also installed at the gallery, the VPL-FHZ55 3LCD Laser Light Source projector offers a powerful 4,000 lumens of colour light output with detail-packed WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution. The long-lasting laser light source allows up to 20,000 hours of maintenance-free operation with no lamp or filter replacement.
The projector’s Lens Shift function, edge blending and 360-degrees tilt angle installation capabilities make the VPL-FHZ55 an ideal choice for a wide range of unusual exhibition requirements in the gallery. This flexibility was put to good use in the group show ‘Moving Light, Roving Sight’, where direct visual projection onto the floors of the gallery space was required for an immersive computer-based exhibit by Tokyo-based collective teamLab. The VPL-FHZ55 was suspended from the ceiling with images projected vertically downward onto the floor; this unusual orientation could only be achieved by a projector using laser light source technology.
